Farm Shed Tips: Can Roller Doors Cope With High Winds?
If your farm is located in an area that is prone to cyclones or even just high winds, then you may not be sure whether roller doors are the best option for your farm sheds. Roller doors and shutters haven't always performed that well in high winds, and you may be worried that the doors will buckle or bend in this kind of bad weather. After all, if you lose the protection the door should give you, then your farm shed and its contents may also get damaged.
If you really favour the convenience and style of roller doors over other farm shed door options, then there are ways to make sure that doors are strong enough to deal with windy weather. What should you look out for?
Look For Australian Standards Compliance
If you're adding roller doors to a farm shed and you live in a cyclonic region, then you may get automatic added security from the door's manufacturer. Australian Standard regulations for external doors now require roller doors to be wind-tested and rated if they are used in areas with a risk of cyclones. Even if you live outside cyclonic areas and are just looking for better wind proofing, you can still benefit from this system by buying doors for your shed that are manufactured to this standard.
Consider Using a Windlocking System
If you don't need to use a roller door that meets wind-related Australian Standards and don't want to buy one, you can add other kinds of protection against wind damage wherever you live. Farm shed roller doors often fail in high winds because they aren't rigid and can bend backwards and forwards as the wind hits them. Adding windlocking to roller doors may get rid of this problem.
Windlock systems typically add clips or runners to the curtain flats of a rolling door. When the door starts to move in high winds, it will attach itself to the clips or runners, at which point it will lock into place. If the door can't move, it can't buckle or bend as easily. This can help keep your door and your farm shed in better shape.
Bear in mind that roller doors aren't the only thing to think about here. You also need to make sure that the shed itself can withstand high winds. To find out more about general wind-proofing for all parts of your farm shed, talk to your shed supplier or contractor.
